Science Based Targets Grow Stronger

If your company sells to enterprise-scale customers, some big new requirements you'll face soon just got published this week. And they're based on science.
Science based targets, like everything in science, should evolve with new evidence. And as of this week, the evidence says there's more heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now than any time in the past 800,000 years.
In that context, the Science Based Targets Initiative has issued new guidelines for reporting. (Almost 11,000 corporations around the world have signed on to SBTi, from Comcast to McKinsey to McLaren Racing. I'll put a link in comments below that you can use to see which of your customers have signed on.)
Two key changes to in the new draft SBTi guidelines:
1. Companies are now explicitly required to set Scope 2 (purchased energy) targets to promote the adoption of zero-carbon energy.
2. Large companies must set Scope 3 value chain emissions goals, which means everyone who sells to a large company reporting to SBTi is likely going to need to come up with a plan to reduce your emissions, and thus help your enterprise customers meet their Scope 3 reduction goal.
Between SBTi, the EU's CSRD, and California's reporting requirements - the pressure to report and reduce emissions is significant. SBTI's announcement seems to suggest a tightening of the specificity of those requirements, including Scope 3 goals and plans. That's good news.
