Today's big news in the sustainability press is that 20+ year old publicly traded green hydrogen provider Plug Power has announced that it has closed a deal with the US Department of Energy to guarantee $1.66 billion in loans for the construction of up to 6 new hydrogen fuel production facilities.
Plug's primary differentiator is its vertical integration: they do it all from hydrogen production to distribution to sales. In a very interesting video interview published earlier this week, Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh said that the derisking that comes from vertical integration is key in selling new technology to established companies like Amazon and Walmart. He also talked about the changing business environment in the US and Europe, the environmental movement's ambivalence about hydrogen fuel, and his success in hiring experts out of the oil and gas industry.
