BP Refocuses on Petroleum

Writer: Marshall KirkpatrickMarshall Kirkpatrick

Good afternoon.

BP has "fundamentally reset" its relationship to net zero plans, slashing investment in renewables, boosting investment in oil and gas. The company's CEO said: “Our optimism for a fast [energy] transition was misplaced, and we went too far, too fast.”

The company will reset to "an unwavering focus on growing long-term shareholder value.”

Long-term stakeholder value be damned.

I guess oil companies aren't going to save us. Back to work we go!

Visual of the Day

(Earth) Movers and Shakers

We generated this visualization from the data in Harvey et al.'s new PNAS study Global diversity and energy of animals shaping the Earth’s surface. It reveals how different animal groups contribute energy to reshaping Earth's surfaces, with elephants leading despite being endangered and ants providing surprising impact through their collective activities. "We conservatively estimate that wild animal species collectively contribute ≈76,000 GJ (gigajoules) energy or more to geomorphic processes annually, equivalent to the energy expended by hundreds of thousands of extreme floods. [emphasis added, but whoa] Livestock acting as geomorphic agents are estimated to exceed this contribution by three orders of magnitude. Our results reveal that the energy of animal geomorphic agents is a significant and overlooked driver of landscape change at the global level."
