Huge news: China announces that it now has more solar and wind installed than coal and gas (thermal) power generation capacity!
Each morning I scan more than a thousand news sources and organizations, and it's hard to imagine data more significant for the world than this.
Anika Patel rounded up coverage and analysis from multiple sources yesterday at Carbon Brief and the numbers look like this:
* 74 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar installations in China in the first quarter of 2025
* 1,482GW is the new total capacity up for wind and solar
* 1,451GW on the other hand, is the national capacity for coal and gas power generation:
* Nuclear is 113GW, in case you were wondering; and it was also reported that China just approved construction of 10 more nuclear plants that will provide a total of 12GW additional power
For context: That suggests that emissions-free energy production now accounts for 52% of China's capacity.
I believe the hope is that the renewable portion of US energy capacity will be 40%, in 3 years.
Good for China, and good for all of us.
And now, our daily summaries of nearly 200 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
