Is battery recycling patriotic?
- Marshall Kirkpatrick

The American Battery Technology Company has announced that it doubled its battery recycling production quarter over quarter, it will raise more money by selling land it owns for $6.75 million, and its released a new short video of its facilities, emphasizing the scale and patriotism of its battery recycling to support domestic battery production.
Manufacturing Dive is the latest press outlet to cover the announcement and puts it in context of the very tumultuous US market and funding landscape for battery recycling.
I'm struck by the patriotic framing of American Battery's value proposition. Popular wisdom since the last US presidential election has been that we should all position our sustainability as a matter of supply chain resilience, because everyone loves that. More patriotic resilience, less of that election-losing environmental justice stuff, people say! Is that what's happening? Maybe not, exactly.
Patriotism + Circularity
True enough, my analysis of 7 leading US battery recycling companies finds that strengthening the domestic supply chain is one of the most-cited value propositions across everyone's websites.
But even more common? Circular economy leadership and end-to-end comprehensiveness of services.
American Battery Technology Company touts all of the above. As well as technology differentiation, sustainability, and even ESG. One of its relatively unique areas of value proposition focus is its research partnership with a co-located facility of the University of Nevada.
I love to see a big tent, with room for people drawn to patriotic values and people more drawn to a sustainability focus.
And now, our daily summaries of nearly 200 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
