Transformation: What Are the Mindset Shifts Needed?

"To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour."
So opens William Blake's famous poem Auguries of Innocence (worth a re-read by the way).
So too in every organizational transformation there's a vision of how we might transform the world. The world's leading consulting firm has supported thousands of organizational transformations and has said that the mindset shifts they most commonly see are the following three. I think the whole world, and certainly our economic relationship with the planet, could benefit from taking some inspiration of this specific view of what success looks like.
3 Mindset Shifts That Recur Most Often in Business Transformation
From assigning blame to taking accountability
See, for example, today's analysis of a new study published in Nature Climate Change by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis finding that just the 10% wealthiest people in the United States and China "led to a two- to threefold increase in heat extremes across vulnerable regions." We should all participate in a shift to accountability.
From working in silos to collaborating where it counts
See today's publication of 2024 sea level 'report cards' map futures of US coastal communities - a great opportunity for coast-livers and coast-lovers to collaborate where it counts the most. See the image above for the West Coast snapshot.
From transactional to relational ways of working
Unfortunately the US is moving in the opposite direction here. Key to relational ways of working is paying attention to the needs and circumstances of others, not just promising them transactions (eg the absurd idea that the Environmental Protection Agency's job is the drive growth of US industry in order to put money in everyones' pockets). An acute opportunity to be more relational can be found in Grist's article this morning Coming this summer: Record-breaking heat and plenty of hurricanes "Forecasters are predicting higher temperatures across the U.S. and up to 10 hurricanes. Cutting federal programs could leave people even more vulnerable."
From blame to accountability, from silos to collaboration, from transactional to relational. Let's do it!
And now, our summaries of 212 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
