Unilever makes acquisition to replace single-use plastics

In a blow against single use plastics, Unilver has acquired refillable body care company Wild. The 5 year old direct to consumer startup is known for mainstreaming re-fillable deodorant. The acquisition is estimated to be worth 275 million Euros.
🌍 Global context
Unilver has pledged to make 100% of its plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2030 for rigids and by 2035 for flexibles. This is one of the ways that will happen.
Let's put this in global and historical context. New research this week models possible a possible weather scenario that disrupts supply chains and drops global GDP by 40% by the end of this century. And the UN is now advocating for a shift from focus on Gross Domestic Product to Net Domestic Product - very logically, resource depletion should count against! Put those two together and we're in a very different global economy.
It's not just numbers, it's about oil, plastic, and distribution of the goods that fill human needs.
Wild and Unilever are operating in that context.
🧠 Product and market strategy
Many good things happen in threes, and Wild's purchase experience for deodorant has three steps:
1. Pick your reusable aluminum case
2. Choose your scents
3. Select delivery frequency (subscription or one-time)
The company's partnership with B-corp industrial design firm Morrama stands out. As does its start in European DTC and digital marketing, but growth into mainstream retail and US markets, including Target.
🐎 LFG
May their success inspire us all.
And now, our daily summaries of nearly 200 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
