What's different about Google and Dow's AI plastic recycling partnership

Google's Moonshot team has announced a partnership with Dow chemical to apply AI to the challenge of sorting plastics in the waste stream so they can be recycled.
AI is of course good at pattern recognition, untangling details from a huge mess of data. (That's what we use it for too, in our hyper personalized email newsletter and in the services we provide consulting clients.)
The Google/Dow project, which ESG Today covered today, is said to be differentiated from startups in the waste sortation space in the following ways:
Polymer Database Development
Google's building an extensive database cataloging thousands of plastic types and their molecular compositions, creating a knowledge repository that continuously improves identification accuracy for hard-to-recycle materials.
Molecular Vision Sorting Technology
Google says its system identifies plastic compositions at the molecular level rather than just visually, enabling accurate detection of complex multi-layered films and flexible packaging that conventional recycling systems cannot process.
Full-System Integration Approach
Unlike other solutions on the market, this partnership aims to span the entire value chain - from sortation to remanufacturing, informing not just recycling processes but also influencing future packaging design decisions to enhance recyclability from the start. For example, by involving P&G in the conversation.
Sounds like a smart, systems-based approach.
And now, our daily summaries of nearly 200 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
