Wind power installations require government permits and in many cases leases in order to be built. The new US presidential administration issued an executive order this week titled "Temporary Withdrawal of All Areas on the Outer Continental Shelf from Offshore Wind Leasing and Review of the Federal Government’s Leasing and Permitting Practices for Wind Projects.”
It's big, bad, but ambiguous news for wind. Daniel Spitzer of Hodgson Russ LLP wrote up a good overview of what we know so far, on Energy Central this morning.
"Trump's executive order has serious implications for the continued viability of both onshore and offshore wind projects...will impact wind projects on private land...[and] raises concerns for offshore projects which have already received federal approvals."
In case this doesn't go without saying, it appears that the Trump administration is feigning concern about intermittent power (that's what batteries are for) and the economic viability without subsidies (laughable, given oil and gas subsidies) to withdraw government support of, even tolerance for, renewable energy. You'll buy and burn oil and gas and you'll like it, he's effectively saying. But who am I to say for sure that he's not operating in good faith?
Meanwhile, zoom out further and the current US market for green tech investments in 2025 is a story of likely widespread consolidation, diversifying funders (though often with more conservative risk/reward profiles), and new focus on energy sources like geothermal and nuclear. That's my one sentence overview of Siteline Climate/CTVC's webinar this morning titled Line of Sight: Climate Capital Stack & Investment Trends 2024. Registration for that is now closed but it will be posted on their YouTube channel in the coming days. I will note that the audience of 400 people expressed more optimism in survey results than the Siteline analysts did based on their data.
