EPA to Stop Measuring Most GHG Emissions: What Now?
- Marshall Kirkpatrick

The Trump administration will turn off the light shined by the federal government reporting requirements on most of the largest industrial emissions producers in the country, it was reported today. The investigative journalists at ProPublica broke a huge story about an hour ago. It begins like this: "The Environmental Protection Agency is planning to eliminate long-standing requirements for polluters to collect and report their emissions of the heat-trapping gases that cause climate change. The move, ordered by a Trump appointee, would affect thousands of industrial facilities across the country, including oil refineries, power plants and coal mines as well as those that make petrochemicals, cement, glass, iron and steel, according to documents reviewed by ProPublica."
It appears, according to my reading of ProPublica's reporting, that fuel production facilities would still have to report their emissions. But a whole lot of measurement will no longer be required.
What do we do now?
⚖️ First, support the parties that will fight this in court.
🇪🇺 Second, it's going to make doing international business much harder. I expect 5 years from now, if this sticks, European companies doing business with US companies will be unsatisfied with the outdated, spend-based emissions factors from their US business partners. The Europeans will be required to reduce their emissions and the path of least resistance will be to stop doing business with American firms.
🌲🌲🌲 Finally, and most importantly, I recommend that we bolster every distributed and local effort we can to measure and manage the impacts of human economies on the earth. If we live by centralized national policy, we die by changes to centralized national policy.
This move by the Trump administration should be unsurprising by now, but the consequences of it will likely prove complex and hard to anticipate. All of this will make stabilization of the global climate much harder.
What else can we do about it? Many things: here's our daily summaries of more than 200 selected updates from around the world of green tech and sustainability.
