There are two big stories I want to highlight today, one large and one "small."
The SEC's approval of the Green Impact Exchange (GIX) as the first sustainability-focused stock exchange in the U.S. To be included in the index, companies must meet a list of requirements, including public sustainability commitments, accountability mechanisms, and short/medium/long-term planning. GIX leader Charles Dolan says: "Climate risk is business risk. It's that simple. U.S. investors and companies are continuing to pursue sustainability because it makes financial and competitive sense."
Second, a new report by the Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA) finds that community solar (small local solar power production facilities that community members can subscribe to) are producing big economic impacts. A single 5-megawatt community solar project can generate around $14 million in local economic activity and support nearly 100 local jobs. Nationwide, the report says, community solar has the potential to drive $120 billion in total economic value.
Oh, extrinsic motivation. Necessary but not sufficient.
